What is evangelism?

This weekend I’m heading to Staffordshire for the first residential of Amplify 2025/2026. For anyone who hasn’t come across Amplify before, Amplify is a 6-month evangelism program for young people that Rural Missions is proud to partner with. Over the past few months, I’ve had the pleasure of reading through these young people's applications and hearing about all they are already doing to spread the Gospel.

Something that stood out to me as I was reading these applications was how many of these young people shared stories of how they use their social media to point to God. Through Instagram posts, TikTok videos, or story updates, they’re sharing how God is moving in their lives, offering encouragement from Scripture, and recommending worship songs that speak to their faith.

These young people weren’t waiting around until they had a training like Amplify or until they had a microphone or a platform. They used what was already in their hands, what they already had.

It’s such a powerful reminder that evangelism isn’t reserved for preachers or big mission trips—though those are valuable too. Evangelism is about sharing Jesus in the everyday, in whatever way that looks for you. And for many young people today, that “everyday” is happening online.

Jesus himself often showed up in everyday moments, like the woman at the well, and met people where they’re at. He walked, ate, cried and laughed with people. This is exactly what evangelism can look like.

Too often we overcomplicate evangelism and think it requires the perfect words or the perfect moment, when, in reality, evangelism is simply sharing the good news of Jesus in the way God has wired you to share it. It may look different from how someone else shares the Gospel and that’s okay. However it looks to you, whether it be a prayer sent to a friend in crisis, a post on Instagram or simply sharing a meal with someone we can all implement evangelism into our everyday lives.

At the heart, evangelism isn’t getting someone to agree with us it’s loving them enough to introduce them to the One who changed our lives. We share because we’ve tasted something good and want others to know it too. That’s what I’ve seen when I’ve been reading these applications. I see young people who don’t share because they have to but because Jesus is real to them and they want their friends to know that hope too.

So here’s a simple challenge: What ordinary tools, platforms, conversations, or relationships might God be inviting you to use for His glory? You don’t need to wait for a perfect moment or a bigger opportunity. Start where you are. Share what you have.
