Hope in the Hills: Reflecting on Our Rural Wales Gathering
What happens when church leaders from across rural Wales gather in one room to pray, listen and dream together?
Last week, we had the privilege of joining with Bible Society to host a gathering at the beautiful Mary Jones Pilgrim Centre in Bala. Bringing together church leaders and practitioners from across Wales, the day was designed to create space for honest conversation about the joys, challenges and opportunities of rural mission.
As Rural Missions, we spend much of our time travelling the country, listening to churches and encouraging leaders. While every community is different, there are often common themes. The Bala gathering confirmed many of those, but it also left us deeply encouraged.
One word seemed to echo throughout the day:
Hope.
Not because everything is easy.
Not because rural churches suddenly have unlimited resources.
But because, time and again, we heard stories of God already at work.
Honest Conversations
There was no pretending that rural ministry is without its challenges.
Churches spoke honestly about ageing congregations, limited finances, volunteer fatigue and the reality that, in many villages, fewer people are expected to do more.
Others reflected on changing communities, with younger generations often moving away for work, leaving churches wondering how to continue serving their villages well.
Yet remarkably, these conversations never became negative.
Instead of asking, "Why is this happening?", people began asking, "What could we do differently?"
That shift in mindset was one of the most encouraging parts of the day.
Mission Starts with Relationships
Again and again, the discussion returned to relationships.
One delegate summed it up brilliantly:
"Coffee and chat... but add in Bibles and prayer."
Mission doesn't always begin with a big event or a carefully planned programme.
More often, it begins over a cup of tea.
A conversation at the school gate.
Helping a neighbour.
Being present in the life of a community.
It's a reminder that everything can be missional when we intentionally look for where God is already at work.
Confidence Matters
One of the strongest themes wasn't about knowledge or resources.
It was confidence.
Many churches already know the Bible well.
They already care deeply for their communities.
What many need is simply the confidence to take the next step.
Whether that's offering to pray with someone, inviting a neighbour for coffee or beginning a spiritual conversation, the opportunities are often closer than we think.
As one participant reflected:
"You never know who your audience is."
The Bible in Everyday Life
As we partnered with Bible Society, it was exciting to explore how Scripture can become more deeply woven into everyday life.
There was enthusiasm for simple, accessible ways of helping people engage with God's Word beyond a Sunday service.
Ideas ranged from short weekly videos unpacking Bible readings to bite-sized reflections that people could share with friends and neighbours.
Rather than creating more complicated resources, there was a clear desire to make the Bible more approachable, more conversational and more connected to everyday rural life.
Looking Ahead
One of the most exciting developments is that we have now advertised our Mission Enabler for Wales amongst 3 more Mission Enabler roles covering the Midlands, North & South of England.
This role has been a long-held vision, and after many months of prayer, planning and partnership, we're delighted to be taking this next step.
The successful applicant will support churches across Wales, helping leaders connect, encouraging mission, sharing good practice and walking alongside rural communities as they discover fresh opportunities to share God's love.
We would greatly value your prayers as we seek the right person for this important role.
Thank You
None of this would be possible without the generosity and encouragement of those who support Rural Missions.
Because of your prayers, financial support and partnership, we're able to create spaces like Bala where church leaders can gather, learn from one another and leave inspired to continue God's mission in their communities.
The conversations certainly haven't finished.
In many ways, they have only just begun.
As we left Bala, we were reminded that although rural churches may often feel small, isolated or overlooked, God is still writing stories of hope across villages, valleys and market towns throughout Wales.
And we're excited to play our part in that story.
Thank you for journeying with us.
