Finding Rest in a Restless World.
Its nearly the end of January 2026 as I write this and by the time you read it, we will be in February! Where is the time going already!
I have hit the ground running and already barely seem to have enough time to breathe! My Fault – I’m in charge of my diary! Rest day???
So in an attempt to have a better time management system to make sure I have some “rest” days, I have been sorting through some paperwork and putting things in some sort of order…Whilst I was doing this I came across some notes I had used for some “Youth Group at home” sessions from the dreaded lockdown of 2020. As the easily distracted person that I am I found myself reading the story and my reflections… It couldn’t have been more timely – I needed to write this blog and was struggling to a) find the time and b) what to write! Thank you God
The Street Bible/Word on the Street by Rob Lacey… day 7 of creation
“Job done – the cosmos and the earth complete… God takes a bit of well-earned R&R and just enjoys. He makes an announcement “Lets keep this day of the week special, a day off – a battery recharge day: Rest day”
I love this – not just the way it is written although it always makes me smile, but what it means. I don’t think God actually needed a rest because He was worn out, He just wanted to look at what he had done – his creation. Rest on the Sabbath.
Years and years ago, as some of you may remember, Sunday was a day of rest for nearly everyone. No big shops were open, you most certainly couldn’t do your weekly shop at a big supermarket. The pubs opened at 12 for a couple of hours and then closed again, there probably were not too many activities available to do either, which is probably why I went to church most of the day as there wasn’t very much else to do. So having a rest on Sundays was quite easy in comparison to today’s way of living. But God wants us to rest… actually He wants us to rest in Him and maybe that doesn’t mean having to go to church on Sunday because for some of us Sunday is a busy working day BUT maybe it just means taking the time to rest in God.
For even just 10 minutes focusing on God and Jesus you will feel calm, you will feel Peace – The peace of the Lord which is beyond all our understanding.
So find a quiet few moments; close your eyes, relax your shoulders and focus on God. Tell him your worries, the things you are thankful and grateful for. Even tell him the things you wish you hadn’t said or done! Let God give you rest from it all.
Thank you God for sending Jesus to save us and the Holy Spirit to help and encourage us.
Help us to rest in your peace Lord.
