Deep Roots in a Dry Season

Have you ever felt like your faith is in a dry season? You still believe, you still love God, but it feels like nothing is growing. Your prayers seem to echo back, and opening your Bible feels hard.

If that’s you, you’re not alone. Every Christian faces these times. The question is: what do we do with them?

God Uses Dry Seasons

It might feel like nothing is happening, but God often works the most in silence. A tree doesn’t grow fruit all year round. Some seasons are for growing roots. When life feels dry, it could be that God is drawing you deeper into Him.

Jeremiah 17:7-8 says:
“Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.”

Notice the picture: a tree that stays green even in heat. Why? Because its roots go deep. It doesn’t depend on the rain. It depends on the stream.

Stay Connected to the Source

Jesus says in John 15:4, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine.”
Dry seasons tempt us to pull away. We stop praying, we stop reading Scripture, we stop showing up. But that’s the opposite of what we need. Now more than ever, stay connected to the source of life.

This doesn’t have to look perfect. If you can’t pray for an hour, start with one minute. If reading a chapter feels too much, start with one verse. Whisper His name. Keep your heart open.

Practical Ways to Stay Rooted

  • Scripture Journaling: Write down one verse a day and what it means to you.

  • Gratitude List: Each day, thank God for three things, even small ones.

  • Fast from Distractions: Take a break from things that drain your attention and use that time to be still with God.

Little steps matter. They keep your roots growing even when you don’t feel it.

Slow Growth is Still Growth

You might not see fruit right now. That’s okay. Roots grow in hidden places. They grow in silence. They grow in trust. One day, you’ll look back and see this season wasn’t wasted, it was preparing you for what’s next.

Stay rooted in Him. He hasn’t left you. He is the stream that never runs dry.
