Overflow
I remember seeing a wedding scene in a film, during which there was a huge champagne fountain made up of hundreds of glasses each stacked carefully in a pyramid. When the champagne flowed from the top, it spilled over one glass and poured out onto another, and another, and so on. With each overflow, another glass was filled to the brim, outpouring onto another, drenching and saturating all in it’s path. What a picture this gives of the goodness of God. How He longs to fill us with His love, His giftings, His passions, His heart for the lost and the broken, and for us to in turn, to outpour it onto others.
Psalm 23 has always been a favourite of mine, particularly verses 5 and 6: ‘You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.’ The Psalmist conjures up such a beautiful image of God’s outrageous abundance. He doesn’t simply want to fill us, He wants us to overflow, to ‘brim with blessing’. Did you know that God OUTRAGEOUSLY loves you today?
In a world that is ravaged by a deep sense of loneliness and loss of purpose, a world full of unanswered questions, it can be difficult to see the overflow of God. Our world can often feel like a desert wasteland, cracked, parched, crying out for drenching from the Holy Spirit. You might be in the wilderness right now, wrestling with the idea of an outrageously loving father.
Why not try thinking of a time that God has been generous to you? How did it make you feel?
God wants to reassure you today that: ‘see I am doing a new thing!…Do you not perceive it? I am making a WAY in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland’ (Isaiah 43:19).
Just as an iceberg has on average 90% of its density hidden underwater, so often it is with God. We can see hints and glimmers of what He is up to on the surface but so much of it is hidden from sight. God’s action in your life is as real as the rest of that hidden iceberg. He will never stop fighting for you.
You might feel trapped, lonely, hurting and frankly unloved right now but God longs to tell you that He loves you extravagantly, recklessly, outrageously! There is nothing He wouldn’t do for you.
What areas of your life feel ‘dry’ right now? How could you invite God’s overflow?
God is doing something new, He is making a way for you.
Watch and be ready for OVERFLOW!
