Every Church Looks Different

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been visiting a number of churches and sharing a bit about an upcoming consultation day, basically a chance for us to sit down together and dig into vision and mission a bit more intentionally. It’s been really good. Lots of great conversations, lots of openness. But one thing has stood out more than anything else: every church is so different not just in looks but the way they do things.  Some feel quite traditional, others much more relaxed. Some are deeply rooted in their community, others are trying to figure out how to connect in places where everything is constantly changing. The vibe, the people, the pace, none of it is quite the same from one place to the next.
And honestly, I think that’s a good thing.
It can be tempting to compare, or to think there’s a “right” way to do church that everyone should aim for. But what I’m seeing is that each church is shaped by its own story, its own people, and the place it finds itself in. Of course it’s going to look different.
That’s part of the beauty of it.
The consultation day isn’t about getting everyone to look the same or follow some kind of template. It’s more about creating space to listen, really listen, to God, to each other, and to what’s going on in the community around them.
The big question we’re heading towards is something like: what is God calling this church to be, right here, right now?
And the answer isn’t going to be identical anywhere.
What’s been encouraging already is seeing churches begin to lean into that, figuring out what feels true for them, not just what they think they should be doing. There’s something really energising about that kind of clarity.
So yes, the differences between churches are huge. But that doesn’t feel like a problem to solve. If anything, it feels like something to pay attention to and maybe even celebrate.
I’m really looking forward to seeing where these conversations go next.
